This Analysis-in-Brief is the second report in a three part series of reports that use CIHI's existing data sources to add to the understanding of ED wait times in Canada with the goal of providing new and actionable information for decision-makers.
The first report, entitled Understanding Emergency Department Wait Times: Who Is Using Emergency Departments and How Long Are They Waiting?, released in 2005, focused on the characteristics of patients visiting selected EDs in Canada and the overall length of time people spent in EDs.
The second report in the series, an Analysis-in-Brief entitled Understanding Emergency Department Wait Times: How Long Do People Spend in EDs in Ontario? provides new population-based information on how long people spend in EDs from the time they arrive until the time they are discharged or admitted to hospital, and some of the factors associated with these times.
The third report will provide insight and data for some of the health care system factors that are associated with ED wait times.
