Approaches for Calculating Average Clinical Payments per Physician Using Detailed Alternative Payment Data  Core

This report looks at the collection of comprehensive physician payment data (both fee-for-service and alternative payments) from provincial medical care plans to enhance the reporting of physician activity in Canada.

Over the last decade and a half, fee-for-service payments have accounted for a declining proportion of physicians’ total payments. This trend is expected to continue in the future as more alternative payment programs (APPs) are implemented in the provinces and territories. In many APPs, payments are not always allocated to individual physicians, making it increasingly difficult to comprehensively understand the services provided by physicians.

5 provinces recently began submitting detailed APP data to CIHI that can be integrated with their fee-for-service data and used to calculate indicators based on more comprehensive information: Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia. In this study, CIHI uses this new information to demonstrate and showcase its use in fully comprehensive average payment per physician metrics.

FAQ

The price you pay for an item depends on the type of organization to which you belong. Until you sign in, we do not know which price applies to you.

No. Regardless of the language in which the publication itself is available, the series screen provides a general description of the publications in that series and, for each edition, gives you the option of choosing the language and the media type (for example, paper or PDF) of the publication that you want. CIHI often publishes reports in both English and French, though there is sometimes a delay between the publication of the English version and the availablility of the French version. The series information will always be available in both English and French, even if the report itself is only available in one language.

If you want the downloadable version of an available publication and the price is free, as is often the case, you can simply download the file (usually a PDF) by clicking the Download link. If your browser does not support PDFs and you do not have a PDF viewer, you can download Adobe Acrobat Reader free of charge at Adobe.com. If the publication is not available in a downloadable media type or the price is not free, you will have to add it to your cart so that you can order it. You must be signed in before adding an item to your cart, so if you have not already done so, you will be redirected to the sign in screen.

If you wish to get more information about a publication before deciding to add it to your cart, click the View link under the Details column for the version of the publication that interests you. This will give you more detailed information about that particular publication.

The History link only appears on the top menu bar once you have signed in. To sign in, enter your username and password in the top-right corner of your screen.
