Sources of Potentially Avoidable Emergency Department Visits

Emergency departments (EDs) give priority to those patients with critical or emergency needs who require timely and highly skilled care. Despite this, many Canadians visit the ED for conditions that might be better dealt with in a different care setting. Shifting these patients away from the ED to more appropriate settings may improve their continuity of care and overall experience, and allow ED resources to be focused on those who more appropriately require them.

This study looks at 2 groups of patients whose visits to the ED could potentially be avoided or addressed in other settings:

The report discusses the frequency and characteristics of these potentially avoidable visits to the ED and provides an in-depth look at the patients who make these visits.
