The conversion tables translate the concept represented by codes in the classifications ICD-10-CA/CCI version 2009 to the codes in the previous classifications ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP version 2000. The purpose is to assist utilization and research analysis for trending or grouping data against previous years.
The ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP addenda and/or errata posted after 2000, and any future versions of ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP, are not incorporated in these conversion tables. Further, these conversion tables incorporated only ICD-10-CA/CCI v2009 and have not been updated with the current version of the classifications.
These tables are designed for one-directional conversions, from ICD-10-CA/CCI to ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP; use of the tables to convert codes in the other direction is not recommended.
The tables contain the valid v2009 ICD-10-CA/CCI codes along with the short code title descriptions and the corresponding valid v2000 ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP codes and short code title descriptions.
Although CIHI's conversion tables can be used to convert codes to those of the previous classifications (ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP), caution must be taken before using and/or analyzing data based on conversions.
Each map is given a grade from 1 to 3 to identify the degree of similarity between the ICD-10-CA/CCI and ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP codes. Conversions with a grade of 3 should be used with significant caution. A grade of 3 is a poor match, a “force fit” — meaning that no specific code map was available in ICD-9/ICD-9-CM/CCP and mapping resulted in a significant loss of specificity.
