The prevalence of healthy behaviours, and differences in behaviour patterns by weight status, appear to vary by age group and sex. Screen time is the behaviour difference that surfaced most consistently when comparing behaviours among overweight and nonoverweight groups of children and youth by age and sex. Differences in dietary habits between overweight and non-overweight groups are not evident among children but are more pronounced for youth, and in particular for girls. Physical activity patterns did not appear to differ by weight status, although research cited demonstrates that inactivity is associated with obesity among certain populations of youth as well as adults. This may suggest that tailored approaches that focus on promoting particular behaviours for girls and boys at different ages may be beneficial.
