Children Vulnerable in Areas of Early Development: A Determinant of Child Health

This product looks at how Canada measures the developmental outcomes and milestones of early child development.

Children who are exposed to optimal environments early in life have the best opportunities to grow up healthy and happy. Understanding how children are developing allows policy-makers to make informed decisions about investments in programs and policies that support children and families.

Children Vulnerable in Areas of Early Development: A Determinant of Child Health looks at how Canada measures the health and well-being of 5-year-olds. An overview of provincial and territorial initiatives to improve early child development is also included.

The indicator Children Vulnerable in Areas of Early Development is measured using the Early Development Instrument (EDI)┐a widely used tool for monitoring the state of early child development.

For more information on this tool, visit the Offord Centre for Child Studies' School Readiness to Learn (SRL) Project.

Visit Your Health System for a regional perspective on this indicator.
