Due to the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, direction related to COVID-19 code assignment will be maintained in an addendum to the Canadian Coding Standards for v2022 ICD-10-CA and CCI. This addendum will be updated as needed to provide the most up-to-date direction on COVID-19 code assignment.

  • Note: April 30, 2021 — An example on page 18 was revised to change the external cause code from Y83.8 to Y84.8.
  • Note: July 23, 2021 — The addendum was updated to provide direction on how to classify confirmed COVID-19 in a newborn.
  • Note: April 1, 2022 — The addendum was updated to identify a CCI code change for immunization (to prevent) COVID-19 that became effective for 2022-2023 data. The code changed from 8.FD.70.HB-BC Immunization (to prevent) COVID-19 [SARS-CoV-2] virus, which applied to the remainder of 2021-2022, to 8.IM.70.HA-ZZ Immunization (to prevent) severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2] by intramuscular [IM] injection of agent or substance NEC.
  • Note: April 1, 2022 — The addendum was updated to clarify that a rapid antigen test (RAT) is not a COVID-19 lab test. Related examples were also added. The clarification applies to the remainder of 2021-2022 and to subsequent fiscal years. This update was communicated to stakeholders via a bulletin on May 17, 2022.
  • Note: April 1, 2023 — The addendum was updated to identify a change in direction regarding the use of COVID-19 tests. U07.1 COVID-19, virus identified is assigned when COVID-19 is confirmed by a COVID-19 test result. A COVID-19 test may be a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, a rapid antigen test (RAT) or a point-of-care molecular test (POCT). Prior to April 1, 2023, U07.1 was assigned only when confirmation of COVID-19 was by a COVID-19 lab test.
