Physicians received $17.7 billion in total payments for clinical services in Canada in 2008-2009, a 9.6% increase over 2007-2008, according to new data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Total payments made to physicians for clinical services include fee-for-service payments (73%), and alternative modes of payment, such as salaries or contracts. (27%). Alternative clinical payment programs varied considerably across jurisdictions and specialties.

Fee-for-service payments to physicians (excluding radiology and laboratory specialists) reached $11.7 billion in 2008-2009. Canadian physicians received an average of $275,637 (gross) in fee-for-service payments in 2008-2009. For family physicians, average gross payments were $229,177, compared to $326,353 for specialists. This average is based on physicians who received at least $60,000 a year in such payments. The average cost per service paid to physicians in Canada was $47.83.
