About CORR

  • What is the Canadian Organ Replacement Register?
The Canadian Organ Replacement Register is a national database managed by the Canadian Institute for Health Information. CORR's mandate is to record and analyze the level of activity and outcomes of vital organ transplantation and renal dialysis activities.

  • Who is responsible for this register?
The Canadian Institute for Health Information manages this register, in addition to other national registries.

  • What is the value of this register?
This national register, which is managed by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, provides statistics that track long-term trends for organ transplantation, organ donation, waiting list statistics and dialysis activity. In doing so, the register makes comparative data available that can contribute to better treatment and patient care and enhance research.

Organ Transplants

  • How many organ transplants are done in Canada each year?
In 2004, there were 1,801 single organ transplants in Canada. For purposes of reporting, this number includes 4 heart-lung transplants. An additional 52 combination transplants were done which included 48 kidney-pancreas and 3 kidney-liver transplants.

  • Which organ is most commonly transplanted in Canada each year?
In 2004, there were 1,070 kidney transplants in Canada, accounting for the majority of single organ transplants (59%). Other single organ transplants included 417 liver, 143 heart, 131 bilateral lung, 22 single lung, 14 whole pancreas transplants and 4 heart-lung transplants.

Transplant Waiting Lists

  • How many people are waiting for a transplant?
As of December 31, 2004, there were 4,004 people waiting for an organ transplant. Of these patients, 72% were waiting for a kidney transplant followed by 17% waiting for a liver transplant. This does not include 50 patients who were waiting for an islet cell transplant.

Dialysis

  • How many people are on dialysis in Canada?
As of December 31, 2004, there were 4,054 people waiting for an organ transplant. Of these patients, 71% were waiting for a kidney transplant followed by 16% waiting for a liver transplant. This does not include 50 patients who were waiting for an islet cell transplant.

  • How many people are on dialysis in Canada?
In 2004, there were 5,079 new dialysis patients. The number of patients on dialysis followed in the CORR database as of December 31st, 2004 was 18,827. The majority of dialysis patients were on haemodialysis (81%) and the balance on peritoneal dialysis (19%).

  • How many dialysis centres are there in Canada?
The most recent information available from CORR reported a total of 92 hospital-based programs in Canada in 2004 that offered full-care renal services.

Organ Donors

  • How many organ donors are there?
In 2004, there were 417 deceased organ donors. In addition, there were 435 living kidney donors and 54 living liver donors.

  • What is the leading cause of death for organ donors?
The majority of organ donors (56%) died from an intracranial event such as a cerebrovascular accident (stroke), ruptured cerebral aneurysm or spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage. The second leading cause of death was head traumas caused by circumstances other than motor vehicle collisions (17%).

  • Which is the most frequent age group for deceased donors?
The average age of donors has increased steadily from the early 1990s when donor statistics started to be collected by CORR. In 2004, the median age of deceased organ donors was 45 years, up from 38 years in 1994.
