In Canada, over 10,000 people are homeless on any given night. People experiencing homelessness are at high risk for compromised mental health, mental illness, suicide and addictions. The pathways linking mental health and homelessness are interrelated. Mental health can be influenced by various individual, social, cultural, physical and socio-economic determinants. These factors can, in isolation or combination, be related to homelessness. Further, while various mental health issues can precede homelessness, others can develop or worsen with continued homelessness.
The Improving the Health of Canadians: Mental Health and Homelessness report provides an overview of the latest research, surveys and policy initiatives related to mental health and homelessness and, for the first time, presents data on hospital use by homeless Canadians.
