  • This report examines factors associated with the flow of patients from the Emergency Department (ED) to the inpatient setting and is the third report in the Understanding Emergency Department Wait Times report series.

The first section of the report highlights the proportion of patients admitted to acute care beds in Canada (excluding Quebec) via the ED and characteristics of these patients. The second section of the report uses data from 277 of these hospitals to examine variations, by hospital type, in the amount of time patients wait in the ED to access an inpatient bed. The relationship between inpatient bed availability and waiting in the ED are explored in the third section of the report and the conclusion highlights selected initiatives underway across Canada aimed at improving patient flow and wait times in EDs.
