  • This publication contains data on 23 selected health personnel groups. Health professions currently included are: Audiologists (new this year), chiropractors, dental hygienists, dentists, dietitians, health information management professionals (formerly known as health records professionals), licensed practical nurses (Source: LPNDB at CIHI), medical laboratory technologists, medical radiation technologists, medical physicists, midwives, nurse practitioners (new this year), occupational therapists, optometrists, pharmacists, physicians (Source: SMDB at CIHI), physiotherapists, psychologists, registered nurses (Source: RNDB at CIHI), registered psychiatric nurses (Source: RPNDB at CIHI), respiratory therapists, speech-language pathologists (new this year) and social workers. For each health personnel group, the standard data tables display 10-years of data by province/territory. Depending on the availability of data, counts of health personnel may reflect:

    • registered
    • registered, active; or
    • registered, active-employed

    Health Personnel Trends in Canada, 1995 to 2004 is a reference document produced by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) to assist health services planning and research. By providing time-specific personnel information for a number of health occupations, this publication may be used by governments, academics, professional health organizations, and researchers to better understand Canadian health system employment trends.
