  • Nearly half (45%) of the 699 residents living in a sample of Nova Scotia nursing homes exhibited one or more behavioural symptoms, which included verbal or physical abuse, social inappropriateness, resistance to care and wandering. Resistance to care was the most common behaviour (30% of residents), while physical abuse was least prevalent, at 10% of residents. Among residents who were mobile, one in five exhibited wandering behaviour. This analysis sheds light on the unique characteristics and needs of residents with behavioural symptoms.

The data for this Analysis in Brief were submitted to the CCRS between 2003 and 2007 by five Nova Scotia nursing homes.
